an old forge converted into a modern hotel

The birth, peak and decline of the traditional handling iron industry and the manufacture of tools in Biscay are carved on the walls of this old 17th century forge converted into the hotel Ansotegi Errota (Ansotegui mill).

DESCRIPTION

The hotel Ansotegi is located in Etxebarria, at the bottom of mountain Kalamua, in an incomparable natural spot with narrow valleys and steep hillsides. Since the Middle Ages this place has represented one of the main transit routes to Gipuzkoa. This two-kilometers of the  former royal route that joins the towns of Markina and Etxebarria, along the course of the Urko river, the visitors can observe ancient mills, forges and tower-houses  until they reach the Antsotegi Errota complex. This preindustrial complex that nowadays has been rebuilt as this hotel, is composed of a palace house, the forge building, part of its hydraulic infrastructure, an annex mill and a simple bridge.

When you cross the threshold of the town of Ansotegi you will travel in time. The building preserves a good amount of the structural elements used in  ancient times such as the forge and the river mill, which were activated by a hydraulic device that used the water from the river. The workshop, where the iron was transformed into  work tools,   is today the reception and the restaurant of the hotel.  In the main coal cellar is the lounge and in the secondary coal cellar the office, kitchen and the bar of the hotel is located.

The mill and forge are annex buildings to the palace, from the 17th century, which has on the façade the shield of the Ansotegi family craved into it. It is believed to come from Andrés Ansotegi, knight of the Orden de Calatrava, a military and religious order founded in the Reign of Castile in the 12th century. The initial objective of this organization was to protect the town of Calatrava located close to the present city of Ciudad Real.

The course of history goes on and nowadays the owners of the complex still carve the stones of Ansotegi. Gontsal Hernando, son of Emilio Hernando, manages the forge building that nowadays accommodates the hotel. Emilio was a member of the first Basque expedition to climb  Mountain Everest in 1980. His devotion to nature is reflected in the bedroom names. He named each one of them after  a river or a mountain name so that the visitors will stay at Lea river or Mendibil mountain. Moreover, on the hotel website there are some suggestions about the routes associated to the place names of the rooms.

On top of history, the hotel has all the modern facilities available and it has also been awarded with the touristic quality Q, therefore one can imagine the quality of the service. It is Gontsal`s   friendly  and close treatment that marks the difference to ones  stay at hotel Ansotegi. Sometimes seeing is believing although by just taking a look at the website www.ansotegierrota.com you can explore the hotel yourself and  feel the warmth that  derives from it.
